Welcome to Nortia!

NORTIA stands for Network on Research and Teaching in EU Foreign Affairs. It is an Erasmus+ network, encompassing ten institutions, led by Dr. Heidi Maurer and Dr. Gergana Noutcheva (Maastricht University) for a period of three years from 2017 to 2020.

NORTIA aims to develop, deepen and strengthen a global community of senior and junior scholars and to actively engage that community with the wider policy world. The scholarly goal is to apply lessons learned from 50 years of foreign policy cooperation to the challenges of a potentially fragmenting global order and Europe’s own existential crises. NORTIA does so by fostering cutting edge research, translating that research into innovative teaching and professional development and then actively engaging in policy debates among ten European network partners and over a dozen global network associates in Asia, Australia, Africa and the US.

By 2020, NORTIA aims to have established and extended a powerful epistemic community on EU foreign, security and defense policy. This community will be actively promoting research on, and innovative teaching in EU foreign policy as well as engaging directly with policy makers in the promotion of the values of global cooperation and conversation via the web-platform.

NORTIA fosters the debate between academics from different theoretical, methodological and geographical backgrounds through its annual research and teaching workshops, guest lectures, Master Classes, and Online Roundtables. Recording of those NORTIA activities allow interested colleagues in other parts of Europe and the world to make use and engage with those debates.

NORTIA deepens the dialogue and interaction between academia and practitioners via carefully designed activities and outputs, such as seminars, briefings and key note speeches. Various Practitioner-academics dialogues, organized by NORTIA members in different countries, will foster the exchange between the research and policy world. Recordings of those and other events will be shared on the NORTIA website

NORTIA provides resources and opportunities for students (essay competition, webcasts, guest lectures/master classes, online roundtables) and actively promotes the professional development of early-career researchers (PhD bursaries and residencies, teaching portfolio development).

The NORTIA website will, over the course of the next three years, offer a rich menu of open access resources, EU foreign policy relevant materials, high quality analysis, and innovative teaching resources. A four-monthly newsletter will inform about new materials and upcoming exchange opportunities, and provide a platform for network members and network associates to share information.
